Our Founder, Dan Simonelli, is not only an accomplished marathon swimmer himself, but also an International Marathon Swim Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) Honor Coach. Having guided hundreds of swimmers across the infamous Catalina Channel.

Dan is the Founder/Director of the Open Water Swim Academy (2012)International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Honor Coach (2024); voting board member of the Catalina Channel Swimming Federation.

He has organized and supported many marathon swim events (over 400), in the US and several other countries.

He has received notable awards such as the 2015 Service to Marathon Swimming Award (MSF); WOWSA Awards 2017 & 2018; National Carnegie Hero Award 2019.

He has completed notable swims including the English Channel, Catalina Channel (twice), SCAR Swim (twice), Santa Barbara Channel "Island Hopper" Swim; and Anacapa Island circumnavigation; and others. 

Summer Wesson is an experienced open water swim support kayaker and marathon swimmer based in San Diego. Since 2021, she has supported more than 50 crossings of the Catalina Channel, helping athletes navigate one of the most iconic and challenging marathon swims in the world.

Locally, Summer plays an active role in San Diego’s open water community, providing kayak support for swims including the Around Coronado Swim, Point Loma to Ocean Beach (PLOB), and the Boomerang (La Jolla Shores to Crystal Pier and back).

As a swimmer, Summer has finished multiple marathon swims and became the first documented person to compete a double crossing from Cancun to Isla Mujeres and back. She currently serves on the board of the San Diego Open Water Swimming Association, where she helps support and grow the local open water swimming community.

Jeff Rake is a lifelong swimmer who started marathon swimming in his 50’s. In addition to several open water races, Jeff has completed the Catalina Channel, Around Coronado, and several other lesser-known swims in North America.

Joining forces with Dan Simonelli and his Open Water Swim Academy to create OWSA La Jolla Swim Camps in 2022, and serving as the Race Director of the iconic La Jolla Pier-to-Cove Swim since 2025, Jeff has become a recognizable figure in the San Diego open water community.

Having served as a kayaker on dozens of Around Coronado swims as well as numerous Catalina Channel crossings, Jeff is a sought-after kayak escort for swimmers seeking reliable support for their marathon swim goals.

In addition to starting his own company focused on nutrition for endurance athletes (Shark Repellänt Nutrition/SharkBars), Jeff is also the founder of the iSwim4 Foundation, which focuses on helping individuals in recovery from Substance Use Disorder through aquatic fitness.

Karianne Scheevel is a lifelong triathlete and endurance athlete. Collectively, she’s completed hundreds of sprint, Olympic, half & full Ironman distance triathlons, plus additional cycling (USCF) and running events. In 2023, Karianne put triathlons aside to focus on marathon swimming, completing Around Coronado and the La Jolla 10 Mile Relay as a solo swimmer.

Karianne is now specializing in coaching athletes that are new to open ocean swimming, and triathletes that are making the transition from pool or lake to the open ocean. Her focus is on safety, technique and revealing the wonderful world of ocean swimming to athletes of all ages and abilities.
